Overview
For our 2024 Japan educational trip, our group will visit and homestay in 3 cities in Gifu (Ogaki City, Hashima City, Mizuho City) and Kumamoto City (Kyushu Island) and 2 other cities in Shizuoka (Gotemba, Fukuroi). Our sponsors will arrange our homestay and organize various cultural activities. On weekdays, we will visit schools (high school, middle school, elementary school), tour a local industry, meet the mayors of several cities in Gifu and Shizuoka, experience wearing the traditional Kimono or Yukata, tea-ceremony, flower arranging, music, folk dance, craft, and martial arts, tour Kyoto or Nara, Miyajima Island, Hiroshima (the Atomic Bomb Memorial Museum), and Tokyo, participate in an international seminar, and attend “welcome” parties as special guests. During weekends and evenings, our host families will treat us to some fun activities, including local tours.
Cost of the 2024 Japan trip: $4,000 [estimated]
This includes:
- round-trip airfare from Portland to Japan and from Japan to Portland
- most meals
- educational/cultural activities
- homestays in two locations (Gifu and Kumamoto or Shizuoka)
- 3 days in Tokyo (youth hostel)
- a full-day tour of Hiroshima
- a full-day tour of Kyoto (or Nara)
- full-day tours/transfers between cities by Shinkansen ("Bullet Train”)
using 2-week JRPass
Our cost is 40% to 60% less expensive than other similar programs in the U.S.!

How to apply for 2024 Japan trip
Fill out the Application Form, enclose an application fee of $60 (by personal or cashier check payable to OIA) for Japan trip and mail them to Dr. Ozawa to reserve your spot! )
